But I Don’t Want to Go!”: Beating the Back To School Dance Slump

As the excitement of a new dance season begins to settle, it’s common to hear the occasional, “But I don’t want to go!” coming from the backseat as you drive your little dancer to class. Between schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and the everyday hustle, children can feel overwhelmed and tired—even about something they love, like dance!

At Showcase Dance Studio, we know all too well that keeping up enthusiasm, especially during the mid-season slump, can be a challenge for both kids and parents. But don't worry, we’ve gathered a few tried-and-true strategies to help boost your dancer's energy and enthusiasm so that heading to class remains a positive part of the weekly routine.

1. Make It About the Fun, Not the Chore

While structure and routine are essential, dance should still feel fun! Creating a “pre-dance hype session” can help transform their mood. Whether it’s turning up their favorite playlist on the drive over, playing a quick game of “guess the dance move,” or talking about what they’re excited to learn in class, framing the experience as something enjoyable helps shift the focus away from the tiredness.

2. Acknowledge Their Feelings, But Keep Encouraging

Sometimes all your child needs is to know that it’s okay to feel tired or drained. Acknowledging their feelings is important: “I know it’s been a long day, and you’re feeling tired, but you always feel great once class starts.” Consistent encouragement reinforces that tiredness is normal, but sticking with commitments will bring a sense of accomplishment and joy afterward.

3. Prepare a Mini Dance Survival Kit

There’s nothing worse than showing up to class on an empty stomach or feeling dehydrated. Packing a simple “dance survival kit” with a healthy snack and a water bottle can make all the difference. Light snacks like fruit, nuts, or granola bars help provide the extra boost of energy they need to fuel their moves. Hydration, too, is key for keeping those midweek energy slumps at bay!

4. Create a Post-Class Reward Tradition

Rewarding effort can keep motivation high! Whether it’s enjoying a family treat like frozen yogurt after class or just spending a few minutes chatting about the highlights of the day, a post-class tradition can be something they look forward to. This helps them associate dance class with positive, shared moments.

5. Celebrate the Little Wins

Take a moment to recognize their effort after each class. Maybe they perfected a tricky move, or maybe they simply showed up and gave their best effort—that’s worth celebrating! Celebrating small victories makes them feel seen and appreciated, turning their hard work into positive reinforcement.

The Slump Won’t Last Forever

Remember, the mid-season dance slump is temporary! With a little extra encouragement, some fun rituals, and thoughtful preparation, your dancer’s motivation will bounce back in no time. Before you know it, you’ll be hearing, “Can we leave for dance class already?” instead of groans from the backseat.

At Showcase Dance Studio, we’re here to support you and your dancer every step of the way. Keep pushing through, and soon, dance class will feel like the highlight of their week once again!
